The Commuter Challenge offers rewards and prizes for traveling green

The Commuter Challenge launches Monday, April 5, promising prizes like REI gift cards, an Ipod touch, bike commuter packs, and more, just for committing to take one ride by transit, bike, or rideshare and for walking, and/or teleworking between April 5 and June 27, 2010.

Here at LiveGreenTwinCities, we're super excited about this, because along with offering up great prizes, the 2010 Commuter Challenge promises ways to save money, go green, and get healthy, too. About 20 percent of our carbon emissions come from vehicles. But by using transit, millions of pounds of carbon emissions can be reduced in the Twin Cities every year. What's more, walking, riding the bus or your bike, or carpooling is gentler on the pocketbook, too.

How will you make the commitment to go greener and leaner this season? We're taking the challenge and committing to busing and biking more than we do, ensuring we'll lose a little weight while also reducing our carbon load. Besides, the Twin Cities' fabulous bike trails have been calling our name all winter, and our wheels are just aching to get dirty again.

To sign up for the Commuter Challenge and be eligible for all of the cool prizes, check out the site on Monday morning when the challenge begins. And this weekend, start planning your new modes of travel--from the bus to the light rail to the Northstar line, to biking, walking, and rideshearing.
